I don’t know why, but I love this.

It’s amazing how adding new music and video effects completely transforms an educational video from the 1950’s. Loves it!

Now, you should watch the original film.

Gee whiz! What a creep!

Pittsburgh’s History Center to Host Vatican Splendors Exhibit

October 1st, 2010 geekstar Posted in Art, Pittsburgh No Comments »

On Oct. 2, the Senator John Heinz History Center will host Vatican Splendors: A Journey through Faith and Art, a 10,000 square-foot exhibition presenting unique objects illustrating 2,000 years of art, history, and culture. The History Center is one of only three venues in North America to host this extraordinary exhibition.

“As the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh, the History Center is honored to bring this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition to Western Pennsylvania,” said Andy Masich, president and CEO of the History Center. “Visitors will experience one of the world’s greatest collections, including some pieces that have never been seen outside of the Vatican walls.”

The Vatican Splendors exhibition presents nearly 200 unique items from the Vatican, including:

  • Original works by Michelangelo, as well as a first generation cast of the Pietà from St. Peter’s Basilica, alongside signed documents and personal objects used in work on the Sistine Chapel;
  • Guercino’s c. 1622 “Portrait of Christ with Crown of Thorns” painting, the first modern representation of Jesus, that has never been on display at the Vatican;
  • 17th century works by Bernini, including carved, gilded angels and a baroque urn depicting the Last Supper from the Basilica of Saint Mary Major;
  • A reliquary containing the remains of Saint Peter and Saint Paul that has never been outside of the Vatican;
  • Original frescoes of saints created between 1277-1280 at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls;
  • Objects discovered at the tombs of Saint Peter and Saint Paul;
  • A bronze Cast of the Hand of Pope John Paul II, which visitors are encouraged to touch during their visit, alongside a handwritten poem from John Paul II; and
  • Historical objects from the modern and ancient basilicas of Saint Peter’s in Rome.
  • WHEN:
    Vatican Splendors will be featured at the History Center from Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, through Jan. 9, 2011. Throughout the run of the exhibition, the History Center will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with extended hours during the holiday season.

    The History Center: 1212 Smallman Street in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District

    Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and students (with college ID), and $13 for children (ages 6-12). Children under age 5 are free. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster and at Giant Eagles. Tickets allow you to schedule a time for your specific visit so as to prevent the center from being overcrowded. People from all over the country are ordering tickets and planning their visit.

    Pittsburgh Festival of Lights

    Presented by: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust
    Venue: Throughout the Cultural District
    Friday, October 1 – Monday, October 18, 2010
    Tickets: Free and open to the public

    Now in its fourth year, Pittsburgh Festival of Lights welcomes visitors to Downtown Pittsburgh at night to view outstanding projection art installations at select spots throughout the Cultural District. I’ve gone every year to see these illuminated works of art. You have to see one of these light art pieces in order to understand how these installations totally transform the buildings downtown.

    This year, Ross Ashton, noted UK creative director and projection artist, unveils four major installations that take visitors on a lighting trail from the David L. Lawrence Convention Center to the back of Heinz Hall, home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

    Joseph Arthur: Photo Recap Liquid Sundays 6/6/10

    June 7th, 2010 geekstar Posted in Art, Events, Friends & Fun Times, Music, photography, Pittsburgh, SHOUT OUT! 8 Comments »

    Last night Joseph Arthur played an intimate set at Joseph Arthur has been one of my favorite artists for nearly ten years. It was the fourth time I’ve seen him live in concert and by far one of my favorite shows to date. Joseph incorporates live looping into his sets where he creates layers and layers of interesting vocal and instrument samples. This creates an amazing and unique concert experience. He also created a large painting while performing on stage. He typically only incorporates art into his shows at venues where he already has a close relationship. So this was an unexpected but appreciated addition to the show. He finished the concert by performing an impromptu acoustic encore while sitting on the merch table surrounded by family and fans.

    Joseph Arthur at Liquid Sundays June 6

    May 17th, 2010 geekstar Posted in Art, Events, Music, Pittsburgh, SHOUT OUT! 25 Comments »

    This is one event you don’t want to miss. First, one of my all-time favorite musicians Joseph Arthur is performing at a small intimate venue. If you aren’t familiar with his music, please check out his website and youtube videos posted below. Joseph has been a long time favorite by critics for over a decade. He typically plays larger venues and tours quite a bit in Europe where he has a large fan base. He is joining us Sunday, June 6 to play at a J. Verno Studios, a large loft in the South Side.

    Also playing are two fantastic Pittsburgh bands, the Harlan Twins and the Long Time Darlings. The Harlan Twins are one of Geekstar’s favorite local bands. They perform soulful rock that has a throwback to the 70’s. The Long Time Darlings also have a classic rock influence and their singer, Brett Staggs, has amazing raw gritty vocals. Geekstar photographed a Harlan Twins show this past November.

    In addition to an amazing band lineup, various local artists will be displaying their art including photography, paintings, furniture, masks, and more.

    For $15 you’ll enjoy live music, art, and unlimited Yuengling. You’ll spend nearly this amount on a regular night out.

    RSVP AT THE FACEBOOK EVENT so we can help build more of a buzz so Pittsburgh continues to host cultural events such as this. Thanks!
